The oldest form of paper money produced by the U.S. Mint, demand notes were first issued to help raise funds during the Civil War. Because of heavy circulation, few examples of the 1861 demand note are known to exist, but the bill is well-known for the dramatic and striking image of Liberty standing tall with a sword and shield at her side. The reverse of the demand notes was printed in distinctive green ink, earning the nickname * greenback, * a tern which was later inherited by other U.S. banknotes.
