1907 Indian Head Double Eagle Archival Edition
In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt commissioned renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to redesign the nation's coinage. Saint-Gaudens presented two designs for the "Double Eagle" gold coin. At the artist's request, dies were made for both options and pattern coins were minted so the President could decide which design would make it to circulation. Saint Gaudens made it clear that he preferred his Indian Head design which featured a magnificent high-relief Miss Liberty wearing a Native American headdress. The reverse, with a flying eagle and the year in Roman Numerals, was also in high relief.
Eventually Saint-Gaudens was overruled and his other design was chosen. The winning design was the equally magnificent "Striding Liberty" which became famous on the 1933 Gold Double Eagle that sold for a record .59 Million.
The Indian Head Double Eagle Coin's Enduring Value
The single Indian Head Gold Double Eagle Pattern became famous in its own right as the only Double Eagle to feature Saint-Gaudens' beautiful Indian Head. Even though pattern coins are not legal tender, they are considered the "Holy Grail" among top collectors because so few exist. The 1907 Indian Head Double Eagle Pattern coin has been a part of some of the most renowned collections in history. It currently resides in a private collection and has an estimated value of Million!
