1937 Fort Knox Gold Vault
Fort Knox, a military post built in 1918, now encompasses 109,000 acres across 3 Kentucky counties. Its name, however, has become synonymous with its most famous landmark: the U.S. Gold Depository. Built in 1936, the fortress like depository sits behind miles of razorwire fencing and is located at the corner of Bullion Boulevard and Gold Vault Road. Deep below the fortification lies the gold vault. Constructed of massive amounts of granite, concrete and steel, the main vault is secured by a 20-ton blast-proof door to which no single person knows the combination. The Gold Depository at Fort Knox is protected by untold layers of security, including more than 30,000 soldiers who are stationed on the post. It is made to be impenetrable because it houses nearly 5,040 tons of gold bullion – the very building blocks of our entire economy.
